Reliance’s Big Pictures has taken the makers of Nagesh Kukunoor’s Aashayein to court, claiming they will not release it because it is not commercial enough. It seems that poster boy John Abraham does not sell unless he reveals all.

Big Pictures, that was all set to distribute Aashayein, has filed a case against the film’s producers Percept Picture Company and T-Series because they felt that the film had not measured up to their expectations. The case has been filed in the Delhi High Court. Percept Picture Company and T-Series are now in a fix because they can’t release the film until the legal tangle is resolved.

A spokesman for the company said, “We were not happy with Aashayein’s final draft. We were promised something and they delivered something altogether different. Big Pictures had felt that the film would be a commercial proposition but it is, in fact, an art film.”

Nagesh’s trusted lieutenant, Elahe Hiptoola, said “But a Nagesh Kukunoor film is a Nagesh Kukunoor film, no matter who acts in it. Nagesh is a terrific filmmaker. I don’t understand why Big Pictures is unhappy with the film now. We had arranged a special screening for them in July. They saw the film and sent us a text message saying that they loved the film and John was brilliant in it.”

Now why would Big Pictures choose Nagesh Kukunoor, who has never followed the beaten track, to make a commercial film? Or is it because Nagesh’s last film Bombay To Bangkok sank at the box office?

Ranbir Kapoor has decided to quit smoking for girlfriend Deepika Padukone as a gift for her birthday yesterday.

Deepika didn’t like Ranbir’s smoking habit. As an advance birthday gift, he promised her that he would give up smoking for her. From January 1 this year, after being a smoker for years, Ranbir has completely quit smoking. Lots of people tried to make him quit but they didn’t succeed. Now he has given it up for Deepika.

Deepika had a quiet birthday with her parents yesterday. She went to Siddhivinayak Temple followed by a quiet dinner with boyfriend Ranbir in the evening.

Says Deepika “My parents and sister was with me last week during Christmas and New Year’s but my sister had to attend a tournament, so she flew off on Saturday. I never like celebrating my birthdays much. But I do make it a point to go to Siddhivinayak. It’s been a great year for me and 2009 looks even more promising.

She adds, “It’s been a wonderful birthday this year. I couldn’t have asked for two better gifts. Also I am leaving for the premieres of Chandni Chowk To China all over the world. Nikhil Advani has taken the film to a whole new level. The most exciting thing is that the film will be premiered at the Warner Brothers Village in Los Angeles.”

We thought that Amisha’s fashion sense had changed drastically for the better since swimming in bikini with Saif Ali Khan. She’d given up her excessive lip gloss and the dumb blonde hair and she had thinned down considerably.
